Drivers test…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Sam has asked to ride his bike to school before the year ends. Last night we rode the route as a first ‘drivers test’. The ride went well, except for slowing down to look for traffic on a few roads. No idea where he picked that up.

Well tonight was finals test night. He was going to lead me all the way to school so we knew his pace to time so we knew how early he had to leave the house. The rule was if he didn’t slow down to look for cars when the sidewalk crossed a street, he didn’t get to go.

He didn’t make it out of the neighborhood. Blew right though the first cross street. On his second mistake he realized what he did. He was devastated. You know what he was mostly upset about? Disappointing us.

That deserved an extra 10 min on the playground and a gentle talk on the way home.

Hit to the gut…

Sam and I were getting ready to read books before he went to sleep and he pulled out the same book Sam and I had read the night before, and the time before that, and the time before that.  (And yes… it was a Star Wars book).  I asked if he could pick out something different.  He said ok, went to his book shelf, and grabbed two other books – ‘Harry the Dirty Dog’ and ‘My First Day of School’.  We had a small talk about his book selection.

Sam: I picked this book because I’ll be going to first grade soon and it will be my first day of school again.

Me: Ok, I don’t think I’ve read that book before.

Sam: How many more first days of school will I have.

Me: Well you’ll have 12 more – 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade…  on to 12th grade.

Sam: Then I’ll go to college?

Me: Yep.

Sam: Then I’ll be all grown up.

Me: [......]

It’s the innocent comments that can sometimes kill you.

How I saw Sam’s first day…

Posted by: | Comments (2)

This picture will be the one that will forever stick in my mind with Sam’s first day of school.

First day of school

Even with the rain and the trepidation of starting school, Sam put on his jacket, grabbed his backpack and umbrella, and headed out the door ready to go.  When he got into his classroom, he settled into his locker, waved goodbye to us, and sat down for story time.  He participated right away and looked at ease.  We were comforted knowing we weren’t walking away from Sam crying or shouting.  Some poor parents had to walk away from their child like that.

It was almost too easy of a transition if you ask Holly or myself.  But… maybe that’s a sign that we’ve done a few things right so far.

A big change…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

As most of you know, Sam started school today.  For all the hoopla of starting kindergarten, a part of me is sad to see this day come.  For 5 years Sam’s world was almost exclusively centered around Holly, Evan and myself.  Now Sam’s world has gotten a little bit bigger and my slice of his life has gotten a little bit smaller.  Sorry world…  I want to be a little selfish and not share this time.  But being selfish is not the example Holly and I would want to set for Sam.  Sharing, even when you don’t want to, is supposed to be a good thing.  And deep down, as much as it hurts, I know today is a good thing.

Well world, I’m about to share one of the most important things in my life.  Please be as kind to him as you can be.  Teach him about the wonder and beauty I know that is out there.  Watch over him when I can’t.  And send him home every night, so I can hear all about the adventures he had that day.  Thanks,  a loving Dad.
