And this is what I found…

Posted by: | CommentsHolly got Sam a new book today, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He got the book about 3:30pm this afternoon and basically read non-stop until a little after 8pm. In those 4-1/2 hours he tore through almost 200 pages. Instead of Holly or I reading to him tonight, he sat down with his book while I got some time to read mine. We both sat on his bed and read until Holly came in to say goodnight after reading to Evan. We had to tell him to put the book down with about 20 pages to go.
Guess who’s getting up early tomorrow?
Dad, we’re learning that…
Posted by: | CommentsI took the boys to the library this morning. We walked around for a while trying to find some new books the boys would want to read. The boys have a habit of finding a book they like and getting it again and again.
Sam came back with a book he was going to read by himself and then stopped in the middle of the aisle. I asked him what was wrong and he said he wanted to make sure the book had some pictures. It did, so he went to sit down to start reading while Evan kept looking.
I came back to Sam and tried to explain to him that as he got older, his books would start to have less and less pictures. I said that pretty soon he’d start imagining what the story would look like in his head. I tried to give him an example and he stopped me right there.
He turned around and looked at me with the ‘Dad, I’m not stupid look’ and said, “Dad I know. We’re learning visualizing a story in school right now.”
It appears I got schooled by my 6y old today.
A little inspiration…
Posted by: | CommentsBeing a relatively new parent, I still get to be amazed and inspired by the new things our kids show each and everyday. Today Sam read a bedtime story to me. I don’t mean Sam just kind of retold a book he’s practically memorized, he read the words back to me. As he was just about to finish the book I looked at him with absolute amazement. He’s gone from barely speaking at 2y old to now being part of the advanced reading group in his class. Sam has no clue the challenges he’s already faced in his short 5 years – surgery less than 24h old, the hearing, and the speech.
Makes me wonder how often we chalk up life’s challenges to bad luck instead of the learning experience it should be?
Making sure it’s right…
