A true Star Wars fan…
Posted by: | CommentsI took the boys to see “Star Wars – The Phantom Menace” today… in 2D. In case you haven’t heard, the entire Star Wars movie saga is set to be re-released to theaters in 3D and ‘limited’ 2D screenings. I told the boys we were going to see Star Wars at the movies theater and they were ecstatic. After lunch, while we waited to go to the movie, all the Star Wars gear got pulled out. The boys had light saber battles, rescue plans from the evil Separatists (we’re a Clone Wars family), and space battles in their fighter ships. After about an hour and half of epic battles I got the kids rounded up and we headed out to the door.
When we got to the movie theater it was about 30 minutes before showtime. (Side note: I’m a Star Wars purist and will not see a time honored classic ruined with crappy 3D effects.) So being a ‘purist’, I figured that there would be a rush of Dads wanting to take their kids to see the movie in its pristine 2D glory. Nope, I guess Mankato doesn’t have as many purists as I thought. Besides my neighbor, and his two kids, there were a total of six of us in the theater. That’s right baby, me and my boys got to see Star Wars, in a theater, all by ourselves!
As the movie progressed, Evan started to get a little tired and cold. So he snuggled on my lap and as the pod racing scene. He’s cheering and clapping as Anakin wins the Boonta Eve Classic. And then he toots. A scene later he toots again and it’s loud enough for my friend to peek over and wonder who it was. Five minutes later he throws up on the floor in front of me. I felt terrible for Evan and hurry up to take him to the bathroom to clean him up. While I’m wiping his face off I asked if we should go home. He got upset at the idea that we’d leave the movie before it was over. So like a trooper, he goes back to watch the rest of the movie. Evan then proceeds to get sick two more times, all the while keep his eyes glued to the big screen.
At this point his pants are wet from the first time I cleaned him up, his shirt is wet because I cleaned him up with a wet towel I got from the concession stand the second time he got sick, and then he proceeds to hold my drink cup as a puke bucket for the remainder of the movie. All the while I’m asking if we should go and he continues to say no. Now I know what all of you are thinking, ‘why in the world wouldn’t you just take this poor kid home?’. I have my reasons… and they’re good ones too. One, Evan was making more of a fuss about the possibility of leaving than he was of getting sick. Two, Sam was there and he’d have a bigger conniption than Evan would if we left before it was over. Three, it was just the six of us in the entire theater. I got up, got down, got towels, cleaned up the mess… you get the idea – I didn’t have to worry about disturbing anyone else. But through it all, Evan kept wanting to watch the movie until it was over. The minute the credits started to roll, he gave in and said he wanted to go home.
Now that’s a true Star Wars fan and his dad couldn’t be prouder!
Some stuff needs to be shared…

The ultimate bribe…
Posted by: | CommentsI believe the key to being a good parent is know what carrot to dangle. For Sam and Evan it’s two words… video game. Tonight Sam and Evan weren’t thrilled with the dinner choice, so I decided to up the ante for our after dinner activities.
Me: Sam, if you eat all of your dinner we can play some video games tonight.
Evan: Me too?
Me: Yep.
[A few minutes go by and the kids are eating furiously]
Sam: I’m really trying to eat all my dinner because I want to play the video game tonight.
Evan: Me too.
[A few more minutes go by]
Sam: I’m really trying to eat all my dinner so I can play the Stars Wars video game.
[Quite a few more minutes go by… ok, it was another 40 minutes later]
Sam: I’m still trying to finish my dinner so I can play the video game.
Me: Ok, but you need to hurry up because it’s also a bath night.
Nearly an hour later I pull the plug because Sam hadn’t finished. Now why do I consider this a win? Because I had an hour of Sam trying to eat instead of whining about the dinner and finishing after 3 bites. Can you guess what I’m going to say again tomorrow night?
And Evan? Well he gave up after about 20 minutes and went to go play. He’s going to be a tougher nut to crack as he gets older.
A big thank you to Shirley & John…
Posted by: | CommentsWe rented ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ this weekend for the boys. It was actually a pretty good movie and Jim Carrey did a good job in it. Well part of watching movies with the boys is they like to watch the previews. Well Mr. Popper was kind enough to give us an extended preview of ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked’. Now the boys had already seen the movie over the holidays with Grandma & Grandpa Tegtmeyer. But after seeing the extended preview, I never realized how thankful I should have been.
Thank you Shirley and John, for taking the boys to ‘Chipwrecked’, so I didn’t have too!
Movie night… Daddy style
Posted by: | CommentsThursday nights Holly has a split shift, so she works in the morning and again from 6pm to 9pm. Tonight I came home from work and Holly and the boys suggested ‘Movie Night’. She said all three of her boys could find something on Netflix and curl up in bed. Sounded wonderful.
So we finished up dinner and discussed what we wanted to watch. Evan had a left over choice of one ‘Star Wars – The Clone Wars’ that he didn’t get to use, so he choose first. After that Sam wanted to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks. Netflix didn’t have it, so we picked out a Toy Story 3 – something for everyone. Seemed like the perfect evening.
This is how it really went. Five minutes into the Star Wars show, I fell asleep. Sam and Evan asked to watch another one and I rolled over and hit play on the next episode. That one lasted twenty more minutes, so that’s when Sam said it was his turned. We searched Netflix, only to find that none of the Alvin and the Chipmunk movies were available. So Sam and I have a brief discussion on why we weren’t going to rent the movie from iTunes and that no, we weren’t going to Cub to see if Red Box had it either. That’s when we decided on Toy Story 3. Ten minutes into the move I’m asleep again. Fifiteen minutes into the movie Sam and Evan are arguing over who has more room on the bed. Twenty minutes into the movie Sam runs to his room to get his Woody doll and proceeds to play it in my ear at full volume. Twenty one minutes into the movie and Woody is no longer allowed to watch the movie with us.
Around 7:30pm, I realize I had fallen back asleep and the boys are no longer with me. It’s at this appropriate point that Holly decides to come down stairs and check on things. Ooops.
Needless to say, movie nights are no longer an option on Thursdays. My bad.
Note: This post didn’t go through as scheduled.
Happy New Year!
Posted by: | CommentsTo all my family and friends, Happy New Years everyone. Normally I would have a very nice post, maybe a nice picture too, but this year I’m spending it fixing a broken cost roll-up report that didn’t fire off correctly. Hope everyone had a better night than I did!
Here’s to hoping that 2012 only goes up from here.
First snow…
Posted by: | CommentsWell the first snow finally arrived today. And like any good Minnesota kid, the boys wanted to go outside and play in the new fluffy white stuff. So Holly, being the ‘par excellence’ parent she is, she went and dug out all of their winter gear. Holly had to dig and search for a couple of items, but she eventually got them dressed. Out the door they went and within 2 minutes of Evan being outside I was cleaning his face off from a softball sized snowball that ‘accidentally’ slipped from Sam’s hand and landed in Evan’s face. After I cleared up the rules of where/how to throw a snowball at each other the boys preceded to play pretty good together.
After all the work Holly put into getting them dressed I think the boys spent about as much time outside as it took to get ready.
Looking for suggestions…
