Bath time with the boys…

Posted by: | CommentsAs we were getting the boys ready this morning, Sam ran off for a second and grabbed some magnetic letters from the fridge. He came over to Evan and said, ‘Look Evan, it’s your favorite word’. Sam laid out the letters to show Evan.
NO
Holly and I couldn’t stop laughing for 10 minutes.
Most exciting part of the weekend…
Posted by: | CommentsSam and Evan got to spend the weekend in Britt with Holly’s parents. First off, God bless’em for taking the boys even after Evan threw up on the way to Britt. Evan was fine after that and bounced back for the rest of the weekend. Sam, as usual, had a great time because he got to watch movies, go to Dollar General, and pretty much have it his way.
The boys got back this afternoon and it’s been a whirlwind of activity since they walked in the door. We all played outside because of the unusually warm day (56°F in late Nov) and then they came in to have dinner. During dinner we watched the Wizard of Oz on TV and then went downstairs to play. So far a pretty fun weekend.
Pretty soon it was bath time and I started getting everything ready. Sam’s job is to get his pajamas and clean underwear when it’s bath time. So Sam went into his room and started to collect what he needed for a bath. And that’s when Sam, in his own words, said was the best part of his whole weekend. Sam came running out to show me his new underwear. Sam got new underwear and it has Scooby Doo on them.
Sorry Grandma and Grandpa, I was surprised that underwear beat out Dollar General too.
Possibly another move…
Posted by: | CommentsNo not house move, but blog move. As I mentioned earlier this month, I have another blog at familytechguy.net. That blog uses a different software to host the page content than the one I use for the MyGeekDaddy blog. There are times I want to post something short and quickly do it while I'm in the momemt – like this morning when Evan said 'Ta Da' just because he got buckled into his carseat (nothing big, but kinda cute). My other blog allows me to post directly from Twitter, so look for some changes in the coming weeks, most likely over the Christmas to New Year's holiday week.
Meet Sam’s next Christmas present…
Posted by: | CommentsMeet Sam's new pets. In addition to all the wonderful things he'll get from his family this year, Sam will also get two frogs and a snail. Sam is such a lucky little boy to be getting a chance for a wonderful learning experience from his parents. Now if you sense a little sarcasm in my voice it's not because of what we're getting him, but where we have to keep Sam's present and who has to feed his two frogs and a snail until Christmas. Any guesses?
That would be correct, I have two frogs and a snail as temporary pets in my office at work. We got them over the weekend when we went shopping while Sam and Evan were at Jennifer's. The kicker to all this excitement is that in the span of 5 hours of anyone else in my office even knowing of their existence, I've had a 3 different tour groups come visit the amphibian exhibit. On the plus side, I have had a chance to chit chat with more co-workers than usual on a Monday morning.
Just in case you're wondering, you too get this exciting gift at any Brookstone store near you.
Dad’s Helper…
Posted by: | CommentsI have a confession to make. For the first time as a parent I used my son to get something done for me because I didn't want to do it myself. You see that pretty tree all decorated with lights in the picture. Well the guy who built our house saw fit (or in my opinion, lack of vision) to only put two outlets on the outside of the house. So to plug in this tree would have required to either run the extension cord across the driveway or through the backyard.
Of course the driveway option wouldn't work because I would be guaranteed to hit, cut, or slice the extension cord within two minutes of trying to clear the first snowfall. So the obvious choice was to run the cord through the backyard to the other outlet. Well the other outlet is on the other side of the deck and so it made sense to run the extension cord under the deck. That's where Sam comes in.
Yes… I asked my son to help me pull the extension cord to where I wanted it by crawling under the deck. We both got flashlights and he crawled halfway across to get the wire puller so I could pull the cord completely under the deck. He thought it was so great that he got to help Dad put up the Christmas lights. I also want to add that he got handsomely rewarded for his effort (he got $5) and that his mother was there the entire time supervising our task.
So for reason of guilt by association, Holly had as much to do with this as I did.
A little overnight trip…
Posted by: | CommentsSam and Evan got the chance to spend the afternoon, overnight, and part of Sunday morning with my sister. I want to thank Jennifer for watching the boys last night. Holly and I got a chance to go out for a bit (Cheesecake Factory – our first date), walk around a bit at Southdale, and have a real conversation on the way home to Mankato.
From what the boys (ok, mostly Sam) said, it sounded like they both had a good time. So good, Holly said Sam wanted to stay another night with his Aunt Jen. But based on Jennifer's text, I think one night was enough for her.
So again, thanks Jennifer! The boys will be happy to come again in another couple of weeks.
It’s the easy things that end up being hard…
Posted by: | CommentsAs most of you know, Sam is head over heels for Scooby Doo. Case in point, his Halloween costume from this year: Flickr Pic. So to add to Sam's fascination with this hapless hound, Cartoon Network's sister station Boomerang has the original Scooby Doo cartoon on every night at 7pm (check your local listing for the correct time and channel). So one motivation factor we've had lately is whether or not he'll get to watch Scooby Doo. Well to make matters worse, the episodes that are starting to air right now are the musical episodes from late 1970 to early 1972 – yes I Googled the songs to figure out the actual titles and learned the dates by mistake. Now with Christmas around the corner and Sam wanting to listen to his own music in his room, I thought finding some of these songs on a CD would be a great present for him. So I started looking for a copy of the songs on CD or MP3.
My searching for these songs has led to the discovery of two amazing facts. One, that the songs in the Scooby Doo shows have been collected onto a single CD – Scooby Doo's Snack Tracks. All the fan favorites from the Scooby Doo show for one low price of $64.79 ($18.98 for CD + $45.81 for a 'sourcing fee'). That was amazing fact number two. It appears that this CD was released by the Cartoon Network for a limited time and has now become a bit of a collector's item.
I found one copy on e-Bay that had just started the bidding. I put in a max bid of $18.01 and as soon as hit enter I was notified that I was outbid and the current minimum bid was $43.02. I found a second disc and I'm fairing quite a bit better with the current bid price at $11.43. Sliding over to Amazon, I found the CD as well. To get the disc brand new was where I found the previously mentioned price of $64.79. The safest used price I could find was $26.47. So we'll see how the bidding goes over the weekend and make a choice on Monday.
Where's Apple and my iTunes store when I need them?
A little perspective from a job well done…
Posted by: | Comments As some of you know (or may not know), but I actually have two websites that I maintain in my spare time. This one and my more techie site at familytechguy.net. An off shoot from these creative endeavors has been Flickr, Twitter and Facebook. Well I can add one more item to the list… writer.
A while back I got asked to do a write up for a software comparison for a GTD website called GTDConnect. The comparison was between two software applications that a lot of people implementing the GTD methodology are using. Well the write-up was well received and I've been asked to do another one. The guy who had to take English 101 twice in college is being requested to write material for public display… go figure. And in that moment of being so proud of myself I realized I was finally being proud of something that did not relate to my normal job. And that was something I haven't felt in a long time.
Up until the day Lisa passed away, I always – to my core – thought that my work/my job was what defined me. I was a project manager, I was an engineer, I was a lot of other things that revolved around what I did for someone else. I was proud of some of the things I did in my personal life – cycling, working on computers, etc. But I never felt that the personal side of my life ever defined who I was. After Lisa passed on, I instantly saw there were bigger and more important things in my life than what I did at work. I realized that friends and family are what will endure as time and jobs go by. As the years have passed, I've gained even more reasons to look beyond what I do for a paycheck – Holly, Sam, and Evan.
And now with the news of my cousin John, whose battle with brain cancer appears to have taken a turn for the worse, I'm again reminded of the lessons I learned from Lisa. Take joy in the little moments you have with the ones you love. Be proud of what you do and what you can call your own. Make sure that the footprints you leave behind are the ones you wanted to make and not led by someone else. And finally… let go of the petty bullshit that keeps you angry or sad or frustrated. Those feelings only take away from the limited and precious time we have on this planet.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you John.
