New talent…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Evan demonstrated a new talent today. And he is SO proud that he can do it too. Can you guess what it is?

He can turn on the TV by himself.

Great, one more parental control lost.

Story time…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Evan has gotten into stories… big time. I don’t mean read books to the boys stories, I mean think up a brand new tale, on the spot, from characters he wants to hear about stories. And the timing of when he wants to hear these marvelous tales of adventure? Just about anytime there is a lull in what Evan can do on his own – dinnertime, going to run errands, bath time, etc. No biggie, we have fun making up new stories, some good and some not so good. But we’ve also tried to ask Evan to also tell stories too.

This morning, as we got in the truck to drop Sam off to school and Evan to daycare, Evan asked for a story. Sam wanted to listen to music, but Evan wanted to tell stories. So we compromised on listening to music until Sam got dropped off at school and then tell stories on the way to daycare. I brought Sam into school and came back to the truck and asked Evan if he wanted to go first with his story. He said okay.

And then I waited. Nothing.

So I waited a little more. Nothing. Evan just sat there looking straight ahead and out the front window.

I asked him again, ‘Did you want to tell stories on the way to daycare, Evan?’

Evan said, ‘I am, but I need quiet to tell my story. Can you please turn off the music?’

So I turned off the music and waited some more. Nothing. Evan was still just sitting there.

About 2 minutes later Evan made the sound of an explosion and some lightsaber sounds. He then continued to quietly talk to himself, almost to the point of muttering, the rest of the way to daycare.

Just as we pull into the driveway at daycare, Evan announces in a loud and proud voice, ‘The End. Did you like my story Daddy?’ He was just beaming with pride on his latest achievement.

I was dumbfounded.  All I could do was smile and say, ‘Best story ever, Evan.’

Oh the things kids do…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

There are parenting events that I know when I will look back on, I'll wish I would have handled it differently.  Tonight was not one of them.  Sam and one of his friends were playing outside and fell into one of the worst traps kids his age could get into… they got bored.  So what do bored kids normally do?  Yep, they find something they shouldn’t get into.  Tonight was tearing apart a big, and I mean 4’ x 4’ big, piece of packing styrofoam.  The results are below.

The funniest part of all of this? The frantic steps Holly took to get the ‘bigger’ mess cleaned up before she broke down and asked where the shop vac was at so they could vacuum up the bits and pieces.
