What Sam doesn’t know…

This is what happens when Sam is away at school. Some things are better left not mentioned.
Fifty years ago and fifty years from now…
Posted by: | CommentsLike many geeks, I listened to the State of the Union address by President Obama while watching reactions from peers on Twitter. While I normally steer clear of politics online (because you never know how it may come back to you), tonight's speech caught my eye when President Obama started to talk about the goals he has for the United States. Goals for better education, more clean energy, and being the leading county worldwide for use of electric vehicles. Reaction to these goals seemed to come down party lines. Democrats praising the President for his vision and leadership. Republicans questioning how can the country afford to make these types of changes. But why are these goal so far fetched?
Fifty years ago another President made similar lofty goals. President Kennedy, in an address to Congress, pledged his support to sending a man to the moon by the end of the decade. This pledge was made just one day after Alan Shepard became the first American in space. It would be nine months later that John Glenn would become the first American to orbit the earth. Can you imagine someone saying we're going to build a plane that will cross the Atlantic just nine months after the Wright Brothers' inaugural flight? Probably not.
But doesn't it make you wonder what can be done if we actually put our heads and hearts into what's possible? What kind of progress could we make if we put the rhetoric aside and look forward to achieving what is actually possible?
Now imagine the world you want for your kids fifty years from now. What are you willing to do to get there?
Lesson learned…
Posted by: | CommentsYou know how parents sometimes make wild ass promises, thinking there is NO WAY their kid will keep their half of the bargain?
Yeah… I’m not doing that anymore. Why? Because it’s -5°F outside and I’m driving to the mall to get ice cream.
Who taught who a lesson here?
Yes we’re alive…
Posted by: | CommentsLong time no talk, err…. post. All is well in the land of the frozen north. We’re all trying to stay healthy as the flu/cold season seems to have hit an all time high at work and school. Quick update on everyone:
Jason: I got picked to do another presentation at a conference in Las Vegas, so I’ll be going out there for a couple of days in late February. It’ll be nice to see Mom and Dad and take a break from the dreary Minnesota winters.
Holly: She’s starting to go back to work on the air and captioning shows. It’s a slow start for now, but all indications show she’ll make a full recovery. Yeah! To celebrate, she’s headed to Chicago for a girl’s weekend out in February.
Sam: He’s continuing to do well in school and is getting better at reading everyday. Sam’s also getting better at video games too. His favorite right now is MarioKart on the Wii. Never realized how good of a motivator a little time on the Wii can be.
Evan: He’s becoming as rambunctious as ever. Life is 90 mph from the moment he gets up (or at least until he’s had his breakfast) until nap time, then it’s up and go go go until bedtime. His big project right now is getting potty trained before spring so he can go to swimming lessons. Another good motivator.
How projects get started…
Posted by: | CommentsHolly: Would you like to put crown molding in here?
Me: Nope, not really.
Holly: Will you please put crown molding in here?
Me: Nope, not really.
Holly: Let me rephrase, when you put crown molding….
And that’s how a home improvement project gets started in our house.
Real honesty…
Posted by: | CommentsSam just declined my offer for an Oreo. His reason? He already got one from Holly after dinner.
I just hope that kind honesty sticks through his teenage years!
Nightly ‘Why’ question…
Posted by: | CommentsEvery night when it’s my turn to read to Sam, he gets to ask one question about how something works or how it was made. Tonight’s question was, ‘How do they make my big Buzz Lightyear?’
This seemed easy enough until I realized that Sam got his Buzz from Santa. So I go through my entire answer and add at the end, ‘So that’s how they make regular Buzz’s. I’m not sure how Santa makes his Buzz’s.’
Sam sat there for a minute, digesting the new information as he usually does, and then added, ‘Well of course that’s how they make a regular Buzz. You can’t know how Santa makes his toys because it’s a secret.’ I replied back, ‘Yes Sam, yes it is a secret.’ Then I got the biggest hug since Christmas morning.
Thanks Santa for starting 2011 the best way possible.
