New house pics…

I’ve setup a new page to show the new house and our progress as we move. Tomorrow we complete the overall inspection of the house. After that we need to pack like crazy and starting the actual move the last week of the month.
A special thanks to both sets of grandparents for the extra baby sitting you’ve volunteered to do this month to help Holly and I keep things moving along (pun intended).
Pics of new house…
Posted by: | CommentsHere is a collage of some pics of the new house. I’ve posted some of the pics to flickr too.
Quote of the day…
Posted by: | CommentsI listen to several podcasts a day on various topics. Today’s podcast was dealing with the effects after hours trading has on a company’s stock price when the traders follow the speculation of tech rumors or an analyst’s hype. Of special interest was how Apple posted the best quarter ever, but had the stock hammered because of several rumors. The best comment that came out of the discussion was:
“If Bozo the Clown, Darth Vader, or Anne Coulter said something (in regards to a company’s stock performance) I’d take that with a grain of salt because they’re just characters, not real people.”
Merlin always has a unique way to comment on a given topic.
Turn it outside out…
Posted by: | CommentsSometimes you have to take a second look at a child’s logic and wonder if they were actually more on the ball than you give them credit for. This morning Sam was getting dressed and his shirt was twisted inside out. Holly explained that he needed to turn his shirt inside out for it to fit. He looked at his shirt curiously while he turned it about and finally reiterated the task and said, “I’m turning my shirt outside out.”
I was getting ready in our room and overheard the conversation and stopped when Sam said his version. What made me stop was the logic Sam had applied to his task actually made more sense than the normal phrase. Sam needed to get the ‘outside’ of his shirt to the outside of the twisted up shirt. So when he said outside out, it actually made sense.
Holly and I then had a 5 minute discussion on why Sam’s version was better. In the end she thought I had an even more tilted view of realty… maybe she’s right.
Sold…

Well it’s official. We’ve placed an offer on another home a couple blocks from where we are right now in Mankato. There are so many positives about this move, I could probably do three or four posts going over them. BUT… we found one (ok, I found) one negative that is just eating at me right now. In our current home we have 5 bars upstairs, downstairs, inside and out. Our new home has 2 bars outside and 1 or ‘No Service’ inside the house. Now I’ll be the first (or maybe last) person to say that a cell phone is not going to prevent us from moving into this wonderful new home. However, this will be a big adjustment for how Holly and I have developed our communication over the last 12 months with our iPhones. We have really started getting used to texting each other with quick updates. With little, or no, cell service we’re going to have re-adjust back to a more analog life. Oh bother!
I’ll post pics of the new house once we seal the deal.
We’re moving…
Posted by: | CommentsWell we finally sold the house and it was a very unexpected sale. We had an older couple come last night and they took about a 20 minute walk around the house. Holly thought nothing of it until she got a call about an hour later from our realtor saying we had an offer come in. We thought this was a follow up from a previous couple but were surprised to learn it was the couple from earlier in the afternoon. We start serious house hunting tonight.
Operation ‘Archive’…
Posted by: | CommentsJust an FYI, but posts may slow down a little bit over the next couple of weeks. I’m in the process of pulling the older posts from my previous site back into this one. The overall back-up abilities of this site is much better and I don’t want to loose some of the history I had with the blog.
First big boy movie…
Posted by: | CommentsSam went to his first movie in a theater on Sunday. We took him to see Wall-E and he loved it! Sam and I arrived a little early for the first matinĂ©e showing and he was a little concerned that we weren’t going to see the movie. So we went for a quick walk and when we came back the gates had opened to the lobby. I got our tickets and a kid’s popcorn pack for him (yes, including a Sprite pop too). If you looked at him after we sat down in the theater you’d thought I just took him to Disneyland. The movie previews went by and Sam thought they were just short little movies (which made the movie even more exciting). Once Wall-E started, he sat there as if this was his 12th movie. We got to a slow scene, and as if on cue, he said we should go potty so we don’t miss any of the movie. We came back and he sat through the rest of the entire movie.
Parents and tech today…
Posted by: | CommentsI got back into the office this morning and got pulled (it was more like dragged while kicking and screaming) into a conversation about what an older manager should do about his kid. Since I was brought into the conversation after it had started I asked for a little back ground. Apparently his kid, and their friends, have been texting inappropriate comments back and forth amongst themselves. All of the patents were a little shocked on not just what was talked about, but how they had no clue it was going on.
Now in this guy’s mind he’s freaking about how his son had been able to communicate so much outside of the email filter he had placed on his home computer. He thought this would be the end all of knowing what’s going on in his son’s life. I told him that it sounded like the messages were sent from his son’s cell phone. He didn’t realize a normal cell phone could do this. He explained that his son has a part time job to pay for the cell bill. I sat back and listened a little more and then asked him if his son used Twitter, AIM, Facebook, MySpace, or Pownce (and these are just the ones I know about). He looked at me as if I was speaking a foreign language for the last 45 seconds.
And that’s the rub for most parents today. Now this guy is a little more oblivious than most parents, but kids have so many more avenues to communicate today. Most of channels kids use today are off the radar screen of anyone over 25, which compounds a parent’s dilemma. What have you done to know how your kid(s) communicate with their friends beyond the phone and email? You might be surprised on what you find out.
Trouble in the bathroom
Posted by: | CommentsIn usual Saturday fashion we got our shopping lists out for morning errands and planned to go out to eat. We got there and Sam immediately said he had to go to the bathroom. I took him in and as we finished up Sam noticed the automatic paper towel dispenser. Sam waved his had in front of it once to ‘see if it works’. He got his paper towel portion and was going to rip it off. As he tried to tear it off, his hands got too close to the sensor and the dispenser ran again. Sam didn’t want this to happen so he shook his hands saying ‘no, no, no’. Well that prompted the dispenser to run again which made Sam wave his hands with even more determination to say no.
You can see the vicious cycle that started between man and machine. I finally stepped after the 5th time the dispenser kicked out more paper towels. I’m giggling the entire time and Sam is frustrated he couldn’t make the dispenser stop, so he looks up at me and says ‘Daddy stop laughing, that wasn’t funny’.
Which of course made me laugh even harder.
