For those that are using the web address mygeekdaddy.net, welcome to the new home of my blog.  The service (typepad.com) that now hosts my blog has additional features that I couldn’t get out of Google’s Blogspot.  Enjoy.

Learning to ride…

Learning to ride...
Sam saw a Spider-Man tricycle at a store earlier this week and of  course asked if he could get it. We said no because he needed to learn  how to use the trike he already has.  So as we were playing outside this afternoon he suddenly stopped what he was doing and grabbed his tricycle.  He said he remembered that he needed to practice so he can get a Spider-Man tricycle.

Not quite as planned…

Posted by: Jason Verly | Comments (0)

Sunday mornings are a little more diverse in our house. Two weekends a month it’s a workday for Holly and the other two it’s our attempt to  cram 2 Sundays worth of activities into one.  So the days we actually  have our act together to go to church, we’re thankful our church has a
nursery – except when it seems we show up.  So now I’m in the nursery  with Sam and Holly went to mass with Evan.

On the bright side, this much better than the last time we came and  the nursery was locked. Sam and I literally wandered around the church halls for almost an hour because he couldn’t sit still in the pew.

Quick thought…

What is the fascination of putting $2k rims and tires on $3k car?

I subsribe to quite a few RSS feeds on a variety of topics.  RSS feeds are little notifications about new content on a website.  RSS feeds ususally include a subject heading and a summary or snippet of the new content.  This way I’m told about new content on my favorite websites with out having to troll and browse each one of them seeing if they made an update.  Anyway, I got this one earlier today that I thought was a little amusing.  It’s about nine things a guy should have in his home, but ultimately why it really isn’t worth it.

#3 Spice Rack:

Impression it gives: You have a dignified palate tuned to the finer flavors in life, and you probably didn’t horribly burn the top of your mouth trying to eat pizza and ride a bike at the same time.

Why you shouldn’t use them: Show us one thing rack spice can do that Lawry’s Seasoning, Mrs. Dash and a little garlic powder won’t take care of, and we’ll eat our perfectly seasoned hat.

I think the funniest part about this item is that it probably fits 90% of the guys I know (married or single), especially since this is normally the way I cook anyway.

Bath time for brothers…

Posted by: Jason Verly | Comments (0)

_1img_2829Sam and Evan have started to take baths together.  Sam has been a real champ in regards to watching out for Evan.  Evan on the other hand has not problem splashing Sam, Holly or just about anyone else who gets in range of his bath.

Blog + GTD = ?

Posted by: Jason Verly | Comments (0)

I love keeping all of you up to date on what’s happening in the big Geek Daddy family.  Part of the fun with this blog is learning new things that I wouldn’t pick up as part of my normal day.  I’ve learned quite a few new coding and programming tricks that I didn’t know last year at this time because of this blog (I’ve also spent one too many nights staying up to late, but that’s another story).  But one of the things I’ve struggled with is keeping all of this new information in a place I can easily find again and again.  Then I got to thinking… why should whatever system I come up with hold just my blogging and programming tricks. It’s been a while since I mentioned GTD (Getting Things Done), but one of the main points in GTD is that if you have a system to do a certain task, that system should work for whatever your processing.

So what new tool/gadget/website did I find to help me out?  Wikipedia.  No, not Wikipedia the website itself, but the software that runs Wikipedia. All of the software that runs Wikipedia (from MediaWiki) is available for free under an open source license.  This means that all of the software that runs the Internet’s most prolific encyclopedia can be downloaded in a few minutes – the web server, the database software, and the encyclopedia framework – for free!

So what I’ve done is wiped clean an old computer at home, installed all my free wikipedia
software, got a free dynamic web address, and mixed it all together.
Baked it at 375°F for 35 minutes and voilà… a personal digital
notebook. And this notebook can be used to store any kind of
information I may want to save and retrieve at a future date – text,
web link, picture, computer file, etc. Plus, with this setup I’m able
to access my wiki at any time via my iPhone, work computer, or any
other computer hooked up to the Internet.

MobileMe…

Posted by: Jason Verly | Comments (0)

Whatis_cloud20080609 Apple recently concluded their WWDC conference where they announced the soon to be released 3G iPhone. Part of the announcement for the new iPhone included the unveiling of a new mobile service from Apple. In their own words, ‘It’s Exchange for the rest of us.’ The allusion is to Microsoft’s Exchange Server which is used by most businesses for email, calendar, and contact collaboration. Exchange Server can push updates from one device out to other devices – i.e. a contact update on a PDA will also be seen on your laptop. The beauty of the service Apple announced is that it will work on both Mac and PC’s, as well as iPhones and the iPod Touch. While the service cost $99/yr, the service also includes 10GB of online storage, a web gallery for pictures, and web portal to access your data (calendar, contacts, mail) from any computer with an internet connection.
