I’m getting bigger…

We’re starting to try to get Evan to use a sippy cup. He did pretty good with his first attempt. Try not to cry Mommy.
Hell has almost frozen over…

Sam and I went to the mall this afternoon. As we passed a few stores, Sam would always point out something in the display… look at the new shoes at Tradehome, smell the pretty flowers at Bath & Body Works, look at the pretty lady at Victoria’s Secret (ok… that was me, but you get the idea). We then passed a Hallmark store and he said, ‘Look Daddy, it’s Mickey Mouse.’ I turned to expect to see some Disney/Pixar display for Wall-E, their new movie for the summer.
Nope. What do I see but a poster announcement for Christmas ornaments to be released on Jul 12. I know the economy has been hurting stores this year, but to even intimate Christmas 2008 in June is a little much. I guess that means we should start thinking about Sam’s 10th birthday, Evan’s first day of kindergarten and my 20th high school reunion. Uhhh… scratch the last one, that’s actually next summer.
The passing of a historic milestone…
Posted by: | CommentsMost of the news you heard today was about gas prices, wars, and the stock market. But an historic milestone occurred today in the tech industry. Bill Gates, found and Chief Architech, resigned his tenure of the helm of one of the most prolific software companies ever. Bill has finally stepped down from leading Microsoft for over 30 years and his last ‘official’ day as a Microsoft employee will be June 30.
While I have been a Mac fan for some time now, I cannot deny the impact this little start-up has had on my life. For me it began almost (and I hate to this now that I know the number) 20 years ago with my Northgate 486DX33 computer. At the time this was THE machine to own: 33 Mhz processor, 8MB of RAM, a 1MB video card, and a 20MB hard drive. This machine was so good, I had to bring it into the Engineering Lab to run some of the simulation software for a senior design class for graduation. Nothing in our computer lab at the time could run it.
From that point I’ve been hooked playing, working, and creating with these silicon marvels. I’ve seen the passing of DOS, extended memory, 16 bit kernel, 8 bit color, 8.3 file naming, and soon the passing Windows XP (and in my opinion the best OS they’ve made to date). June 30 is also the last day Windows XP is available for general purchase by the public. It seems almost cosmic that the same day Bill ends his run at Microsoft that Microsoft ends its run with Windows XP.
Well… I do have to say my hat’s off to Bill and all the wonderful work he has done in and outside the halls at Redmond. His focus will now be on the work of the Gates Foundation and the wonderful they’ve started. Good luck Bill!
Night time prayers…
Posted by: | CommentsHolly and I say night time prayers with Sam every night. As time has gone by the prayers have got a little more colorful and imaginative. The prayers at night always start with:
"God, thank you for my friend Alex, and my friend Katie, and Lexy, and Kory…" then things can get a little more off the beaten path on what he could be thankful for.
"God, thank you for my light bulbs so I can see…"
"God, thank you for my fan to cool me off…"
"God, thank you for Mommy’s flower in the shoe shirt…"
"God, thank you for my Car stickers…"
They may not be the funniest things in the world, but when you’re sitting there you are just amazed at the things he can come up with. I’ll keep everyone updated with some of the more creative gems.
But Dad, it’s not an iPhone…

a quick thought…

Ran across this while going through my RSS feeds: How to Take a Nap! Now… if you ask Holly she will tell you I do not need any help on how to take a nap. In fact, she can actually get a little annoyed with how fast I can fall asleep at night. The article from the Boston Globe (click the picture to see a full size view of the article) goes into great depth on the what times, the reasons why, and the best methods to take a nap. Isn’t it great the things the Internet can show you?

Getting wet…

One of the hit spots at the zoo was a water fountain area kids could walk through. Sam took off his pants to play in the water (we followed the lead of other parents first). One of the things that was fun about the fountains was they would turn on and off unexpectedly. In this picture, Sam is looking down the hole of one of the water nozzles of the fountains. Literally… a few seconds later he got a blast of water straight in the face. Almost as funny as the mother/daughter team in the goat pen. Almost.
Sam at the zoo…

Sam had the best time in the petting farm area with the goats. He couldn’t get enough of them. Everytime we saw a new animal he would say, ‘I want to go say hi to them.’ This meant please get me out of the stroller, get me over the fence, and I want to walk up to the animal and pet it. His curiosity of animals was amazing, to the point he was practically asleep as we left the zoo and kept asking what animal are we going to see next.
The zoo is definitely on the ‘do it again’ list.
A day at the zoo…
Posted by: | CommentsThe whole family went to the MN zoo today for a mid-week outing. Holly works every other weekend, so she gets every Tuesday off. All I can say is Sam had a blast! The monkeys were the first thing we saw and after about two minutes he was asking what was next. We went past sea otters, bears, and bubbling mud.
The biggest attraction for Sam was the petting area in the Farm Area. There were about 10-15 goats in a penned area that you could pet and feed them. Personally, I thought it was funny the way a Mom and her daughter reacted when a goat took care of business about two feet away. You would have thought someone had dumped toxic waste on their front lawn. Too funny.
Look for pictures later tonight on the blog and on Flickr.
